Basketball season is over and many coaches need to start to think about how to prepare their returning players for the next season. Gym time in the off season can be limited. It is important that any time spent working in the off season allows a player to improve skills and work on conditioning. When players get in the gym it is important they work out at game speed. An individual will not improve if they just stand around and take jump shots. Skills that will be needed during games should be emphasized. Individual work outs should be limited to 2-5 players to ensure a player gets many repetitions. Working in a small group will also give the players an opportunity to improve conditioning because there is very little rest time. Always remember that players are made in the off season and teams are made in during the season.
There are two shooting drills that allow a player to work on different parts of their game. The first is Zig Zag Shooting and the second is Around the Cone Shooting. Zig Zag Shooting allows a player to work on conditioning, shooting and on ball defense. The drill begins with a player on the baseline in the corner. The player gets into a defensive stance and does defensive slides until half court. Once the player gets to half court, they sprint to the three point line getting ready to shot as soon as a pass is received. After the player shoots, the drill starts over again.
Around the Cone Shooting has a shooter start at a cone that is placed in the backcourt. The player sprints to the three point line and shoots off the pass. After a shot is taken, the player sprints around the cone and goes to another part of the court to shoot again. This drill is great for conditioning and learning to shoot tired. When going through theses shooting drills make sure goals are set. There should also be a small punishment for not achieving the desired mark. I have also included a shooting workout that Kyrie Irving, from the Cleveland Cavs, does during his off season work.
