Gregg Popovich has the San Antonio Spurs ready to make another deep run through the 2015 edition of the NBA playoffs. He is arguably, one of the best coaches in the NBA. He has been the measure of consistency since taking over the head coaching duty of the Spurs in 1996. In 19 years in charge, he has only had one losing season. Coach Popovich has lead the Spurs to 4 NBA championships and has been named the coach of the year on three occasions. The Spurs have been to the playoffs for 17 straight seasons. The Spurs are one of the only teams in the NBA that are able to play without a starter, or two, for a few games and not miss a beat. Coach Popovich has a great system that helps players succeed.
One of the reasons that make Coach Popovich successful is that he has a knack for putting players in the right place at the time. The play I have included is an example of giving the chance for a player to succeed. The Spurs had lost all momentum in this particular game when Coach Popovich called a timeout. Most coaches would draw a play for Tim Duncan or Tony Parker coming out of the timeout. Many teams will focus their defense on the two star players. The play was actually designed to get Danny Green a three point shot. There are many potential options for this particular set play. As the play took shape, I could tell that Green was the player who was going to take the shot. He was able to knock down the three point shot to help propel the Spurs to a comeback victory. Follow the link below to view the out of bounds play that was discussed.
