March Madness

Tonight's game between Duke and Wisconsin will go down as one of the better games in the history of the NCAA tournament. Both teams left everything they had on the floor and I can definately say that Duke earned the championship. It is not very often the finals features two #1 seeds and they lived up to the seeding. Duke fought back from a nine point deficit in the second half to come out victoriuos. This is Duke's 5th National Championship. They were able to win with freshman scoring 60 of thier 68 points. Wisconsin was playing in their second straight Final Four and first ever Championship game. Bo Ryan has a great system and had a veteran team that set their goal to win the Final Four. Even though the Badgers came up short, they should be congratulated on the great two year run.

The match-ups for the game was about as good as it can be. It was entertaining to watch Freshman Jahlil Okafor battle Senior Frank Kaminsky. Kaminsky got the best of the match-up but Okafor's team won the game. The next time these two players will see each other they will probably be in NBA uniforms next season. The Duke frosh has a chance to be a number one pick and Kaminsky will most likely get drafted in the lottery portion of the draft. With that match-up being the headline going into the game, the play of the Blue Devils guards was the reason for the 5 point margin of victory. First year players Tyus Jones (named Most Outstanding Player) and little used Grayson Allen led the way down the stretch to lead Duke to the title.

Duke proved all doubters wrong by playing defense down the stretch and were able to keep the most efficient offensive team in college basketball in check. Playing a zone was a life saver for Duke, at times, in the game and is some of the reason for the defensive improvement. The old saying that offense sells tickets and defense will win the championships seemed true in tonight' finale.

As college basketball ends for the year it will be interesting to see what players declare for the NBA and who stays behind. The decisions these young men make in the next few weeks will help shape the outlook of next season's March Madness. Hopefully your favorite team does not lose any players to the NBA and they are able to make a run at a championship next year in Houston. Go to the Forum page on Hoop Support and talk about your favorite college team chances to win next season.
